Government authorities from New Zealand visited FONTAGRO to discuss projects involving adaptation to climate change.
Mr. Mark Sinclair, Climate Change Ambassador, and representatives from New Zealand’s Embassy in Washington D.C. and FONTAGRO’s representatives.
(Washington, D.C., October 14, 2016) New Zealand Government authorities visited FONTAGRO’s offices, led by the Climate Change Ambassador of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr. Mark Sinclair, who was accompanied by the following officials from New Zealand’s Embassy in Washington, D.C.: First Secretary of Trade and Agriculture Janine Collier and Second Secretary of Trade and the Environment Murray Bruges.
During the meeting, which was attended by FONTAGRO’s Executive Secretary and its Administrator, ongoing projects that are part of FONTAGRO’s cooperation with New Zealand’s Government were analyzed. Other issues discussed included livestock farming climate change, implementing climate-smart technologies in agriculture, and drafting public policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in agricultural production; all within the context of food security in the region.
FONTAGRO and the GRA
As part of its collaboration with New Zealand, FONTAGRO was recently incorporated as a member of the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases, which brings together 46 countries interested in increasing more food without growing greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture. The Council is currently chaired by Mexico and its secretariat is based in New Zealand which supports the work of the Council and research groups.
